Canyon of Desolation (aka Hard Things)

When we acquired a permit for a river trip down the Green River through Desolation Canyon we were thrilled! We quickly invited family and friends and shared our excitement with them. "They would love it!" we told them, "The perfect family trip!" Darren had guided on this section of the Green 6 or 7 times about 14 years ago. We knew the bugs could be bad down there, but we are, after all, experienced roughing it kind of people. "Bad" now has a completely new meaning for us. Even if we had been told how bad, I don't think it would have registered with us, being something totally out of our realm of experience. SWARMS would be more like it. Swat your leg and kill 50 mosquitos bad. At the put - in the ranger said they let up 26 miles down. 26 miles in a day with kids? On flat water? Unheard of! Well after an hour of getting eaten alive even while on the river we set our sight for Jacks Creek rapid 26 miles downstream and made it quite handily. We still had mosquitos for days, but not nearly as bad. I now know if I don't make it to heaven I'll be doomed to Sand Wash, UT! Lest you think the whole trip was doomed I have to say it turned out great! Beautiful scenery, great rapids, fun beaches and great company! We just didn't notice, or even care for that matter, about any of these things until the mosquitos dissipated! Justin rowing the girl boat. He can read the river really well and could row almost everything on this river. His only hinderance is his size, he simply doesn't weigh enough to make the pulls out of some of those eddys!
View from the cliffs above. Darren scrambled (I held my breath) up these cliffs to check out some ruins we thought we could see from below. We're talking sheer cliffs, shimmying up chimneys, but he's a mountain goat.
An Indian grainery. Darren had to sit flat to fit into this spot. His foot shows the size. How cool to think these were made so long ago! He's several hundred feet up. How did these people raise kids in this canyon?

Darren and Brady kayaked almost the entire river. I was so impressed with Brady's tenacity and skills. Beware all swirly monsters! You can't keep Brady down, even in his "miniature kayak", as some of the kids were calling it.
I had lots of help rowing.
Paige holding up a catfish, itching mosquito bites and smiling all at the same time - talented girl!
Sand fun.
Paige's legs after the first day. That's just her legs, the rest of her body was just as bad.

On every trip we go on Darren and I end up with lots of kids on our boat. This picture is typical of what we looked like, but ususlly Darren was in the kayak with Brady. My shoulders are still sore! Maybe I shouldn't bring candy on my boat anymore! Actually it is really fun to hear the silly songs, jokes and stories the kids come up with. We spent our time renaming the cliffs and valleys, boy are they creative!

Darren has his legs inside his spray skirt, no skin exposed meant no mosquito bites. (Sometimes)
My 10 year old hero.
There was a point on this trip when we hit melt down time. Paige was screaming, "I want to go home" over and over, (I didn't blame her), her other favorite was "I'm going to die!" (as everyone on the trip can attest to hearing) everyone was itchy, irritated and tired. The thing is, the only way home was to keep going, whether the bugs were going to let up or not. There are always going to be mosquitos in our lives. People who are rude, illness, tough classes, deadlines, accidents, deaths, friend problems, job stress..... the test is how we deal with it. These days we have such nice lives, so many conveniences, that when we come across bumps in the road do our kids really know how to deal with it? Do we? I had a lot of time to think of these things while lying awake scratching and scratching, and scratching (and listening for bears) Maybe the mosquitos were a blessing, it forced us to have to deal with something hard and miserable, there was no choice, no way out but through it. The next time we hit a difficult spot in the road ,with no sure end in sight, we can say to ourselves, "I can do hard things!" And the take out will come, sooner or later.

Brady's Birthday Party

We held Brady's birthday partyFriday night, a few days early since his bday is actually on Sunday. The day started out rainy and awful, but ended up just windy. The kids didn't mind the wind at all so we went ahead with the zipline and s'mores in the firepit. We only had one fatality. (Just kidding)
Justin and Ryan
Do you even have to wonder why we love Reese?

His dad would love this one.

Another reason why we love Reese. We had so much fun with good buddies, and Brady ended up with some serious cash. What more could a 10 year old want? (Actually there are a lot of things, he'll have to wait until Sunday to see if he gets any of them!)

Why I love Kimberly....

OK before you're grossed out, this was actually a delicious, and nutritious meal for my family made possible by my sweet visiting teacher! This is just one of the reasons I love Kimberly! Visiting Teachers that bring you a whole chicken that they raised and slaughtered! It was yummy and my kids had no problem eating it while wondering what color of feathers they thought it might have had. This is a good sign, we've been wondering if they would be able to eat the chickens we are raising.

Rebel Hairdo

Justin said he wanted to spike his hair on the last day of school. What a rebel. That morning after they caught the bus I went downstairs and found two sticky notes that said "spike hair." Apparently he did not want to forget to do it.

Mountain Bike Mania

And I just cleaned the floors!

Paige's Baptism

Paige's big day finally came. She was baptized on Saturday, she has been really excited for this. I don't remember the boys being quite like this. She cared about everything right down to the last detail of having a "big" sandwich for the luncheon after the baptism.
Luckily we had Aunt Emily around for the hair do portion of this extravaganza. With four younger sisters she's had plenty of hair practice. Poor Paige was born to a mother who is hairdo challenged. Without Emily's frenchbraid we might all still be sitting in the chapel waiting for the Holy Ghost talk.
My mom, Paige and me.
What would we do without good friends? I get chills looking at this picture. There is no substitute for good friends that stand by you at all times. I feel the same way about their mothers. The first thing Paige said after getting baptized as we walked back to change was, "Is that it?" Then, reffering to Abbey and Izzy, "I guess they couldn't make it." She hadn't seen them sitting on the front row. She was so happy when I told her that they had been there. Her friends are very important to her. We appreciate all our family for supporting Paige, we're so lucky and feel so loved! One of Paige's favorite things to do when the Jenkins come to visit is to ride the horses with Autumn. They got Doc all saddled up, but Paige wouldn't ride. She told them that she didn't want to ride because she didn't want to die or break her arm before she got to get baptized! Should I think this is cute, or should I be extremely worried?

Weekend fun with the family

We did a lot of fun things with our families this weekend. I hope to get a hold of the pictures of my mom and Darren's mom on the zipline. They both did it! Julianna is almost 1 years old. She is so pleasant and fun. She loves to say "baby".
My mom kayaking at Twin Falls Reservoir. I was WAY more nervous for her than she was for herself! If you know my mom at all you will be so impressed to know she kayaked and did the zipline in the same weekend. She is really getting brave in her "older" age.
Ryan is professional.
Justin and his sunglasses, always prepared. I don't have a picture of Brady, but he did two rolls in his kayak - and the water is freezing. He was pretty excited that he still had it after a winter of not rolling at all!
Grandpa helping Paige. It is tradition in our family to get wet before your baptism. Justin fell in the creek above Vineyard Lake, Brady in the river while rafting the Hagerman, and Paige, after being threatened by her brothers to keep the tradition alive, settled for a swim at Twin Falls Reservoir. Notice Darren is missing, he will appreciate that I mentioned he was at WORK. He thinks that if you just look at our blog you would think he didn't have a job. He does. It's just too boring to post pictures of him sitting in his office all day and night:)
After the Falls to Falls race. Chris, (Darren's brother) his wife, Jennie, me, Darren, Heather (Darren's sister) and my dad. We all ran the 5.5 miles starting at the BOTTOM of Twin Falls and ending at Dierkes Lake. Actually I have to let you know that Chris and Jennie started at the top of the Twin Falls grade (cheaters). Darren hardly ever runs and has never run 5.5 miles in his life. I run all the time, including running up this grade quite often. So I kept telling him he could just walk if he needed to, he was afraid he would totally die. Well, what I should have done was trip him as he passed Heather and I as we were running up the hill, or at least poisoned his gatorade. He ran it in 42 min. - about 7 1/2 min miles!!! Heather and I came in about 2 1/2 min after him. I feel really good about how I did, that is until I remember how well Darren did! You make me sick! No fair! WAAAAA! My dad did it in 66 min. I am so impressed! He has been training for the Bryce Canyon 5k, that is training to win! He's not going to let my mom beat him even one more time! She would have been doing this in a heartbeat, but she's had a run of bad health and injuries - next year mom!
